Beginning a weight lifting program can be intimidating, scaring and when I first started, it made me very nervous.

I remember the first time I ever went to a gym.  I had no idea what I was doing, I just knew I wanted to get in shape. I didn’t know any workouts, I had never head of a bench press before and assumed I was supposed to get under the bench and push it…

I am not trying to make too much of a dick of myself, just explaining that if you are beginning, or getting back into a weight lifting program then there are some things you should know and understand before storming the gym every day.

::::

Here are a couple of pieces of advice if you are just starting out:

  1. Your gains are not made in the gym. Your body repairs the muscle that you break down in the gym when you sleep at night. So don’t make the mistake of thinking that if you spend more time at the gym you will get bigger, stronger, faster and more ripped, because you won’t. Get a good amount of sleep each night, for me I find anything less than 7 hours I get tired during the day, but different ages and types of people will require different lengths of sleep.
  2. When you first start at the gym, you should be working your entire body for at least the first couple of months. This would mean doing a workout like this:
  • Bench press: 8 sets of 2
  • Back squats: 8 sets of 2
  • Calf raise: 8 sets of 2
  • Incline crunches: 8 sets of 2
  • Shoulder barbell press: 8 sets of 2
  • Bent over rows: 8 sets of 2
  • Straight leg deadlift: 8 sets of 2
  • Optional: Bicep, tricep and forearm workout

I would also recommend that after every workout you should take a protein shake to help your muscles get access to good sources of protein as soon as they need it. When you hit the gym hard you break your muscles down and protein is what will fix them back up and make them stronger, ready for next time.

This is what I normally take:

  • Cup of milk
  • 2-3 egg whites
  • Peanut butter
  • Cream
  • Yoghurt

This is a good hit of protein, and although it has some fat in it, it doesn’t really matter because your body will use it, not store it.

Before you go into the gym, check out videos or look at some pictures of how to do the workouts I told you about above, and then at the gym ask an employee (or somebody who looks like they know their stuff) to make sure you are doing them right. Form is everything, and yes there is a easy way to o some lifts of weights, but it will never get you proper gains and your progress will plateau big time.

It seems that shakes and smoothies are the norm in weight loss now, so what is the most effective weight loss shake, how much are they and do you have to buy them?

Shakes and smoothies are heavily promoted by massive corporations now, so does that mean that they actually help you to lose weight? Or are they just another fad that you should ignore and get back to the gym?

::::

Buying shakes, supplements, powders, pills and other weight loss paraphernalia can soon take its toll on you, mentally, and not to even get started on financially!

The shakes promoted by certain weight loss companies are crazily expensive for just one serving… How these people justify charging so much for a simple shake that can be whipped up in you own home is beyond me.

This is one case where we pay for something, then feel immediately ripped off after it.

Being overweight and out of shape is stressful enough, let alone actually having to deal with the problem. There is so much pressure around you to take massive action but you are just blown away by the amount of idiots out there proclaiming they are the messiah of weight loss products and everybody else is a liar.

Well I think you and I both know, there is no lost prophet of body sculpting, only good old fashioned clean eating and working out. Anybody who tells you that you can avoid this phase is lying straight to you, whether it is a sales person, a website, an infomercial or otherwise.

::::

All that shakes or smoothies do is offer nutrients to your body in a different format to food, comparable to a CD versus a Floppy Disk.

It has been stated by many, and disputed by many, that when you take in a source of food in a liquid form it is easier for your body to digest, therefore you get more nutritional value from it. It is not my job to support this view from either side, just to figure out what you will from this paradigm.

I believe that shakes are a great way to get in a quick meal without having to cook, sit and eat. Especially straight after a workout or when you are in a hurry, however I do not believe that you should banish “food” to the dark ages either.

One to two shakes a day is a good number.

::::

Now, how much do these shakes cost?

Well, I sell them and they are only $9.97 per shake.

Jokes.

I am also a strong believer that you should make your own shakes, as you never quite know what somebody else is sticking into your milkshake..

My favorite recipe is:

  • 1 scoop of frozen berries
  • 1 cup of milk
  • 1 banana
  • 2-3 eggs
  • 1 scoop of protein powder

Mix it all up in a blender and drink it!

Feel free to experiment, I won’t sue ya.
