Since man first discovered we can drink that cool, clear refreshing liquid that comes out of the vending machine clouds, we have often asked how much we should drink per day… But for weight loss how much water should you drink?

First we need to understand our goal – when you say weight loss, I presume you mean you want to lose body fat.. Right?
If not then shave off your hair, walk everywhere naked, stop eating food and drinking water and you will lose weight, but that probably isn’t your desired outcome.
Stop being an @$$hole Johnny.
Okay your desired outcome is to lose body fat, not to lose muscle or give away your bones to archeologists or donate your internal organs to hospitals.
Now that you know you want to lose FAT, you have to ask:
Does Water Help Fat Loss or Hinder Fat Loss?
Water itself actually helps your body to lose fat, through many dynamic ways such as:
- Detoxifying the blood system
- Increase flow of vitamins and minerals to where they are needed
- Increase your energy and stamina which mean you put more effort into your workouts
- Increase concentration meaning you will think more clearly about nutrition and exercise options you are faced with every day
- Create more urine which expels your body of excess junk
- Drinking hot or cold water can increase metabolism, burning more fat
- Water creates a smooth operation of functions in your body which increases the speed of excess fat removal
When you first start to exercise and eat well, you often see about a 4-5lb drop of weight in the first week. Most of this is water weight and the recipient of the fat deficit is stoked!
They then continue to believe that too much water is bad for them and so they stop drinking so much water because they think it makes them “fatter”.
This couldn’t be further from the truth.
Sure, bodybuilders and fitness models will sometimes cut out water for a day before a contest and just drink the bare minimum, but this is not healthy.
Your plan SHOULD be to lose all of the body fat you want so you are in absolutely irresistible shape, then have the option of cutting your water consumption a bit of a day to achieve an extra lean look.
If you do it the other way, that is, stopping drinking water to lose water weight and then try lose fat, you will end up in the emergency room from dehydration you moron.
If you have an upcoming event such as a pool party, a beach bbq, summer day picnic, hot date or whatever you can use water cutting methods to get rid of some excess water in your system, but this is not a long term strategy.
The best strategy is to drink as much water as possible, all the time within reason, burn off all the body fat you want through smart exercise and good eating, then if you so please, slow down your 3 liter a day habit to less and you will see some water go bye bye and see more ab definition.
I can’t state how important it is to do it in this way, let me give you an example:
Bad Experiment With Water Cutting
John Moron decides he wants to get ripped for summer. He is an idiot and decides to stop drinking water and eat less.
Because he is such a moron he thinks that water is actually able to turn into fat, only God knows how or why he thought that.
He tries to exercise but is so dehydrated that he can’t sustain exercise for more than a few days, plus he gets killer headaches, pains, he is irritable, moody, has a constant dry mouth, constipation and numerous other illnesses, just because he is a moron.
Don’t be a moron like this guy.
I like to keep a bottle of water that is 1.5 liters around me at all times and probably drink about 3 liters per day. Sure, if I stopped drinking water I would lose a few pounds of water weight, but it would give me such a small improvement in my physique that unless I really, really, REALLY wanted to get an extra ripped look in my abs for the day, I wouldn’t even consider drinking less water.
Action Steps
Drink as much water as you can, preferably over 2 liters per day because it will help you burn a whole heap of body fat, as long as you use exercise and nutrition strategies that are tested and proven.
IF at some point in the future you decide you want to get insanely ripped and lose the last 2-3lb for a competition, photo shoot or party, you can ease off on the water &you will wizz most of it out leaving you looking sexy like knee high socks.
