Some people actually do seem to have all the luck when it comes to genetics, motivation and equipment etc… Is it luck?
Yes there is a certain element of luck to life – it would have been nice to be born Bill Gates’ son, but I am still grateful that I am born who I was.
Just like some people are born with overweight parents who instill terrible nutrition habits in their child from birth, some people are born to parents who believe health and fitness is a very important part of life.
However, I don’t think that any of this matters too much
Let me set the scene here for you.
Fight club is the movie this comes from – if you haven’t seen it, then you must. This is the best movie that has ever been released – period.
Brad Pitt’s character enters a convenience store with a pistol and wearing a back pack. Of course he is looking cool, tanned and buff.
He takes the clerk out the back of this store and makes him kneel on the ground facing away from him with his hands behind his head.
Brad Pitt asks this man (Raymond) what he always wanted to do with his life.
The bewildered clerk says “I don’t know”.
Brad Pitt asks him again “What did you always want to do with your life?”
This goes back and forth for a few scenes before Brad Pitt cocks the pistol pointing at his head and then asks him one final time “What is is you wanted to do with your life?”.
Fearing for his life, the clerk says he wanted to be a veterinarian.
Brad Pitt asks him why he isn’t a veterinarian, and Raymond explains that he got stuck in life and studied the wrong thing in college and then it was too late.
Brad Pitt takes his wallet which has his address and details and says in similar words to this “I am going to visit you in 6 weeks – if you haven’t taken the steps to start studying to become a veterinarian by then, I will kill you”.
- Let me ask you something – do you think that Raymond the store clerk will now be motivated to become a vet?
- Do you think that whatever challenges he currently faces in life will be all of a sudden just trivial inconveniences?
- Do you think that because he knows he will die if he doesn’t start doing what he always wanted to, he will now start studying at a Vet School and become a qualified vet?
Whether or not you believe in the morality of this scenario – it does display one thing that is undeniably true: motivation is available to ANYONE.
It is not a question of if you can do it, but more a question of do you have the necessary motivation to do it?
If you are a single young guy who has alright looks, does alright at college and generally just coasts along, has no problem getting girls etc, you may not have much of an incentive to workout, stick to a plan to get ripped or build up muscle mass.
If you all of a sudden thought to yourself “I am going to become an actor. I am going to become the next Brad Pitt, I am going to learn how to fight and act and become the next big actor that girls just adore”, all of a sudden you will have an unstoppable surge of energy, and motivation will not even be questionable.
If you are a 30 year old female who has 2 kids, a house and a husband, you might appear happy and content with your life, but secretly want a whole lot more. If you one day declare that you are going to become a model and sell your photographs for money to give to charities, then you have just committed to something much bigger than yourself – this will create motivation and accountability much more powerful that you just writing in your diary “I will lose 10 pounds this month”.
Some people do seem to have all the luck, but most of the time they have created their luck by positioning themselves in the right circumstances, not just wishing for the right circumstances.
Instead of wondering why other people have it so easy (because the grass is always greener on the other side…. right?), how about you take some sort of action to create massive motivation inside you. Then no genetic or motivation problems will hold you back.
Here are a few ideas to make motivation natural:
- Make your goal part of a plan that involves others such as running a
triathlon with your friends.
- Start a plan with your partner to hit the gym or exercise 3x a week, and if you succeed treat yourselves to a night out (or in)
- Do something for charity such as relay running, losing weight on a dollar per pound scheme, offer yourself for photo shoots or similar and then give the proceeds away
- Write a public fat loss journal or other progress journal and include a photo of yourself
- Make friends with people at your gym by offering to spot them or just strike up a conversation about your goal – help each other out
Humans are odd, we would rather let ourselves down than let others down.
This is one of the master keys to motivation – if by you failing your goal you let others down, you will be far less likely to fail.
The boy will always try to lift more weight when a girl walks past, the girl will always try to look her best when she dresses up for a party, nobody puts themselves in a bad light when others are listening, so why don’t you make yourself accountable to others, and help them as well as yourself to this FREE method of motivation!
